What is TUDCA, and What are Its Benefits? Comments Off on What is TUDCA, and What are Its Benefits?

Tauroursodexycholic acid (aka TUDCA) is a supplement that is gaining popularity due to its myriad health benefits. TUDCA has been shown to help with everything from helping with digestion to improving inflammation by reducing free radicals.

So, what is this mysterious supplement, and why should you consider taking it? Let’s dig in.

What is TUDCA?

While commonly taken in supplement form, TUDCA is a naturally occurring substance. More specifically, it’s a water-soluble bile acid. The bile comes from bacteria in your large intestines that get turned into ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA). When the UDCA combines with taurine molecules, it becomes TUDCA.

TUDCA supplements have been used for millennia in traditional Chinese medicine. While today’s supplements are developed synthetically, TUDCA was initially sourced from the bile of bears, which is half comprised of TUDCA.

Our bodies naturally create bile acids, which are helpful for many bodily functions, such as breaking down fats, helping with digestion, eliminating toxins, and absorbing certain vitamins. Sometimes, though, there’s too much of an accumulation of bile particles, creating what is known as “bile sludge.”

Bile sludge is a form of cholestasis, which refers to any condition that keeps bile from its natural flow from the liver. When left untreated for an extended period of time, cholestasis can lead to severe illnesses.

TUDCA Benefits

Anyone suffering from cholestasis may benefit from taking TUDCA supplements. TUDCA can enhance bile flow, reduce bile sludge, improve digestion, and promote healthier gut and cardiovascular health. Studies also show that TUDCA can improve insulin sensitivity.

TUDCA is safe for most people to take multiple times daily, including while intermittent fasting, to improve digestion and gut health.
